Why Be a Statistic?

For no particular reason, I looked at the Weddings page in today’s New York Times and all the happy faces there. Then I wondered how many of these marriages, sadly, would eventually end in bitter divorce. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the divorce rate is about half the marriage rate per 1,000 people.

As a teen, I read the humorous, sci-fi parody, Where Were You Last Pluterday?, by Paul Van Herck. For the main character, marriage was easy. But divorce was a complicated and expensive affair—and he had good reason!

Where will your relationship end?

Worse case is when a relationship ends, one party takes wicked vengeance. Last night, I searched for something using Google Images and unexpectedly came across a site where someone had published sex pics following a bad breakup. No surprise, it was a guy, who had taken photos of his girlfriend while she satisfied him or took it off for him. Following the breakup, he took his revenge.

I hate to sound so morbid, and I won’t excuse this guy, but loving relationships aren’t supposed to end. It’s the way human beings are made.

I want to offer my best wishes to those people announcing their marriages or intentions to marry. Please don’t be one of the statistics.
