Flickr a Day 15: ‘Cherry Pop’

Choosing a camera is as much about how it looks as how good the photos can look in the right hands. One reason I bought the Fujifilm X100T is the retro-design. But I made few compromises, given the compact’s benefits. Flickr member Janine, and that’s all the name she gives, confesses choosing fashion over photography.

She shot the selfie, on July 10, 2010, using her then new Sony NEX-3, which she mainly bought for the color. Janine explains: “Meet the new toy, Cherry Pop. In hindsight, I realize I should’ve just bought the NEX-5 cos it can function with a remote. But I really, really want a red one…I’m justifying”.

Mirror selfies are cliché, but it’s the story Janine tells that makes this photo a Flickr-a-Day selection. Like yesterday’s pick, I found the image by searching for “red light”. Vitals for self-titled “All that jazz”: f/4, ISO 200, 1/15 sec, 28mm. Hehe, I like how her toenail polish generally matches the camera’s color. The sun shining behind set against the dirty mirror’s reflection creates great effect—while her legs, lower body, and camera are crisp.

Janine’s most recent Flickr pics, from December 2014, were taken with the Sony SLT Alpha A55, which is same vintage as the NEX-3. She uses several lenses, including f/1.8 50mm prime and f/3.5-5.6 18-55mm telephoto.

The Philippine native, now living in Florida, joined Flickr in November 2008. “I take pictures for fun”, she says—and to be honest her photography is nowhere near the caliber seen over the first two weeks of this series. But there’s something carefree about her shooting style, particularly when using remote or timer for selfies, that appeals.
