A Furry Friend Passes

Seemingly constant cackling filled the days outside our living room window as a squirrel squared off with our tortie Cali—sometimes for hours on end. The cat raced among windows in three different rooms, watching the rodent.

Four days ago, I found a large squirrel dead in the street, not far from our parking space. The silence since confirms my suspicions about its identity. I will miss the chatter, and Cali is quite unsettled by the absence.

I shot the Featured Image, using Leica Q, through the glass panes on Oct. 26, 2017—not long after moving into our then new apartment. The oddly-composed cropping removes reflection of an indoor lamp. Vitals: f/5.6, ISO 160, 1/60 sec, 28mm; 11:41 a.m. PDT.
