Small Town Living

I couldn’t reach my dad to wish him Happy Father’s Day. Calls kept coming up “User Busy” on my smartphone screen. One of my sisters shared similar problem, and we mutually expressed hope that perhaps phone service is out or his dog knocked the phone off the hook.

I startled reading this text from her, and laughed: “Dad calls the sheriff every morning. If he does not, then they send someone to check on him”. Hey, Ho, No. He is not a career criminal out on parole and under police supervision. My father is a 74 year-old with a heart condition, who lives alone in the country. Welcome to small town living, Northern Maine, where the sheriffs serve and protect.
