When starting this series on New Year’s Day, I couldn’t imagine that a viral pandemic would sweep across the human landscape and come to affect some of the selected images. I started closely watching spread of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2)—also known as COVID-19—in late January, wanting to incorporate news here. But I wouldn’t find first image usable to discuss the contagion until March 2 with vintage-2012 “Willing Prisoner“. Six weeks later, more-timely choices abound.
The week—and Earth Day—goes to Phil Roeder and self-titled “Neighborly Love“, which is a keeper for color, composition, contrast, documentary-style, impact, and timeliness. “A house on 31st Street in Des Moines shares some messages with passing motorists”, Phil explains.
