By chance, I visited the MTV site this afternoon, where there is a preview of all the nominees for this year’s Video Music Awards, which airs later tonight. Great promotion and bigger than postage-stamp-size videos, too. I just couldn’t resist watching and handicapping some vids.
If I were voting, strictly on the basis of the videos and not necessarily the music, I would pick:
Best Group video: The Killers, “Mr. Brightside”.
Best male video: Beck, “E-Pro”.
Best rock video: My Chemical Romance’s “Helen”, even though The Killers “Mr. Brightside” is equally good.
Pop video: Hands-down, Gwen Stefani, “Hollaback Girl” (a.k.a., dumb cheerleader). I’d boot out Ashlee Simpson’s “Pieces of Me” (Why was her video there?).
Best new artist video: John Legend’s “Ordinary People”, figuring Ciara’s “1,2 Step” has a good chance at best dance video and The Killers and My Chemical Romance in best group and best rock videos.
MTV2 award is wicked tough, but I would give it to Akon featuring Styles P for “Locked Up”.
Breakthrough video: The choices are all excellent; four winners (Sorry U2, “Vertigo”). Sarah McLachlan probably should win for “World on Fire”. If I were to give Missy Elliot featuring Clara & Fat Man Scoop’s “Lose Control” best dance video, my breakthrough choice would be Gorillaz “Feel Good Inc.”
