Capturing Crown Daisies

When deciding whether to move from the Galaxy S23 Ultra to its S24 successor, I wondered if Samsung’s iterative design would be better enough. Yes! Display’s reduced reflectivity, 2600-nit screen brightness outdoors, insanely long battery life, and Galaxy AI are among the refinements that matter. That said, I am most satisfied with the photography experience.

Colors are less saturated and more accurate. Photos are no longer over-sharpened and, related, they are more natural looking. Clarity is improved, and often shots satisfy straight from the smartphone—little to no editing required. The Featured Image is an example.

On May 1, 2023, I shared with you two captures of crown daisies, taken using the S23 Ultra. They’re back, and on April 2, 2024, I set the S24 Ultra on a flower patch along the same stretch of Alabama Street in my San Diego neighborhood of University Heights. Like last year, BLVD North Park apartments are across the way.

I used Portrait mode to create blurred background, which is more natural-looking than expected. Details are sharp, and the colors are vibrant but relatively accurate. Vitals: f/1.7, ISO 12, 1/1250 sec, 23mm (film equivalent); 2:34 p.m. PDT. Composed as shot; unedited.

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the Galaxy S24 Ultra—with one regret: Color. I should have ordered orange, rather than green.
