The #DumpTrump crowd clashed with the candidate’s supporters here in San Diego this afternoon. Ha! I didn’t know he had come to speak—at the convention center. Trouble started around 4 p.m. local time, following his speech.
I’m more taken back by the police presence than what actually happened. As I write, about two-and-a-half hours later, there are 500 cops in full riot gear and bulletproof vests outside San Diego Convention Center. The area is closed, with an order making it illegal for anyone to remain in the area. Hey, is Trump still around? Run before you get arrested, Donald. 😉
I am watching the local news, which downplays the severity of the protests. Got to wonder if national news outlets will make the violence seem larger. Twelve people are confirmed arrested—not many—and there is no reported property damage. Either police response was fabulous, or the protesting was relatively minor compared to some other venues where violence surged. More people are being arrested as I write; on Harbor Drive. Anyone incarcerated can expect to remain in jail over the Memorial Day Weekend and as late as Wednesday, according to Fox 5 News.
Protest of any kind isn’t surmising, and I would have expected larger turnout than the reported one-thousand. After all, San Diego is about 15 miles from the Mexican border, where Trump has pledged to erect a wall.
The screenshot is from the local Fox News affiliate, which I typically don’t watch. But the station has the best live coverage.
