This is No Fairy Tale

Third weekend of the month means the book sale room is open at my local San Diego Public Library branch (University Heights). My wife and I stopped briefly by, but we didn’t stay long. The crazies, as I call them, are all over the place on Saturday mornings, loading up massive amounts of books into bags and boxes.

Based on the choices, such as physical condition, the early birds appear to be buying books to resell. (Can you say Amazon?) We checked out with two DVDs for Annie and one Aesop’s Fables for me behind some dude paying more than $90—at standard price of buck-a-book, the number is obvious.

While we waited, another dude wheeled in a standard library cart to handle his purchases. Among this month’s front-and-center features: graphic novels, and lots of them. Earlier, I saw him hunched over a smartphone, seeming to search for titles online, presumably for price checking. If such-and-such Manga typically goes for, say, $10 used—and you only pay one dollar—there’s money to made. That doesn’t account for unexpected rarities that would be worth considerably more.

Shelves will be more sparse tomorrow, but looking will be easier and my priorities are different: Buying to read or for reference, not for resale, so I’m good with battered and tattered, whenever necessary.

Okay, let’s move onto the Featured Image, which comes from Leica Q2. I used the camera’s dedicated Macro mode, which is activated by turning a ring around the lens barrel. Vitals: f/2.8, ISO 640, 1/15 sec, 28mm; 8:50 p.m. PDT.
