Happy Day of the Dead—”Dia de los Muertos”. Hence the self-title of our selection shot by Colin Gallagher four years ago today. Vitals: Nikon D700 and 85mm f/1.4 lens, which is a helluva prime for […]

Flickr a Day 304: ‘Never did the Pumpkin Thing since Childhood!’
I debated long-time about what pic to pick for Halloween. Jack o’ lanterns are cliché, but Cristian Iohan Ştefănescu does them well—and I want to draw attention to his photostream, which is a real treat (no trick, promise). 🙂
One word describes Cristian’s style, whether expressed from the lens or in post-processing: Interesting. He has a terrific eye for composition and perspective. Some of his more recent art I could have featured if not for the holiday: “Study: Cats Understand Humans but don’t Really Care“; “Try walking in My Eyes!“; “Bring the Art Down on the Street and They will Come!“; “Life is a Foreign Country“; or “Hable Con Ella“.
My New Halloween Friends
I don’t eat candy anymore, so sought another treat for Halloween: From Dead Zebra/Dyzplastic this year’s holiday appropriate Special Edition: Warty Witch. “We found a few Lucky Lucy figures in the warehouse, so we have […]
Flickr a Day 282: ‘Aero Club Bad Nauheim — Tag der offenen Tür’
Complimentary colors and perspective take the Day, with this simple shot from Sept. 6, 2014. Barbara Müller-Walter used Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 to shoot self-titled “Aero Club Bad Nauheim—Tag der offenen Tür”. Vitals: f/5.6, ISO 125,1/400 […]
Flickr Day 271: ‘Thelma and Louise’
Professed car and technology enthusiast Kārlis Dambrāns is a photo editor by trade, and it shows in the images he captures or post-processes. He shot self-titled “Thelma and Louise” on Aug. 29, 2015, during the “Retro auto” […]
What’s Next for Project Fi?
As September 29th approaches, and Google’s annual autumn launch event, rumors increase in frequency, and a few in absurdity, about what will be revealed. The gadget-obsessed shouldn’t forget what else might arrive with one, or even two, rumored new Nexus smartphones: Expanded support for Project Fi. I am surprised how little buzz there is among the fan base. Where are the rumor-wagging tongues?
The search and information giant introduced the invite-only cellular service in April 2015, piggybacking Sprint and T-Mobile networks for a cool $20 a month, plus 10 bucks more for each gigabyte of data (refunding for portion unused). The gotcha: Project Fi only supports one device: Nexus 6. You buy one or you bring your own. Otherwise it’s fee-Fi-fo-dumb for you.
Flickr a Day 266: ‘Vibrant Hot Air Balloons’
Color and composition take the Day and brilliant blue sky as canvas. Nicolas Raymond shot “Vibrant Hot Air Balloons” on Aug. 17, 2013, using Canon EOS 5D Mark II and E F24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. Vitals: […]
Flickr a Day 263: ‘Fireworks’
By including the crowd, and making it primary point of focus, Eser Aygün gives great perspective for the light show, which also appeals for color. He shot self-titled “Fireworks” on Jan. 1, 2015—Happy (belated) New […]
Is This Apple’s 9-11 Respect?
Apple’s decision to start iPhone 6s and 6s Plus preorders on Saturday September 12 surprises me. Friday is typical, which lets the company tabulate an extra day into the weekend when reporting the number of preorders the following week. So you have to wonder why the change. I asked Apple PR, but there is yet no response yet.
In 2014, Apple announced iPhone 6 and 6 Plus also on September 9th, a Tuesday. Preorders began on Friday the 12th and sales one week later. In 2013, there was no preorder option for iPhone 5s, just straight sales starting Friday September 20th; announced the 10th. In 2012: Fridays September 14th for preorders; the 21st for sales. In 2011: again Fridays, October 7th preorders and October 14th sales.
iPad Pro: My Story in Tweets
Apple’s newest tablet, announced earlier today, isn’t on my shopping list. At 12.9 inches, the screen on the iPad Pro is too big. The device can’t comfortably fit the hands for long periods of time. I have experience with 12-inchers. I will likely keep my iPad Air 2, unless Google comes out with some gotta-have Nexus tab before Apple starts selling its beast in November.
The media event marks a big day for the fruit-logo company, which also introduced new Apple Watch models. That’s code for same internals with more case color and band choices. Apple TV gets a big refresh, and new iPhones are queued up for preorders starting Saturday September 12. The company usually does Friday, but that’s the 9-11 terrorist attack anniversary.
Flickr a Day 241: ‘Festival of the Dead, Missoula MT’
Is this one instance where color would work better than black and white? When shooting the Leica Camera AG M Monochrome and Summicron-M 35mm f/2 lens, as Mick Orlosky did on Nov. 2, 2013, color […]
Night at the Park
Sometimes San Diego delights most unexpectedly. Yesterday, I entered an alternate universe—a lovely neighborhood that could have been from a 1980s Steven Spielberg movie. Kids played everywhere. Freely. The clang of metal baseball bats rang out from the park, where parents cheered and encouraged their middle-school players. Pretty homes, none too different from another, lined clean streets, from which the sound of playing children created intoxicating atmosphere.
My journey started with a request: Provide transportation to the Rebelution and Sublime concert at the Sleep Train Amphitheater. My soon-to-be 21 year-old daughter asks for rides so infrequently now, I couldn’t refuse. But given heavy traffic around the venue, 27-km distance drive, and her plan to return in two hours or so, I figured to stay in Chula Vista rather than roundtrip. But where to hang out—from the commercial-property isolated locale?
