Macabre is the adjective that I apply to the photographs of Derek Raugh, who shoots “anything out of the ordinary. My work tends to lean towards the darker and alternative”. Portraiture is his forte. “I like to collaborate with the model as far as concept, etc. The photos should reflect some essence of the model. I try to avoid the cookie-cutter approach”. Ha. I’ll say.
I chose self-titled “Who Can Take the Sunrise'” for how it reflects his shooting style: “A deviant perspective; an exploration of light and darkness; an attempt to expose a bit of what lies beneath; my portraits and those who inspire me”. However, I prefer ‘Bad Moon Risin’“, but the copyright is All Rights Reserved, and this series only features work released under a Creative Commons license.
Derek heavily edits his photographs, which he treats more as works of art. He also uses various lighting techniques to create the mood. For this photo, “strobist: single, small soft box, remote triggered, up and right”. Other vitals for the portrait, captured on Nov. 24, 2011, using Canon EOS Rebel T2i: f/3.2, ISO 400, 1/6 sec, 50mm.
