We wrap three days focused on the Foveon sensor with Sigma’s original professional compact—the DP1. I owned the camera, which requires finesse for its clunky controls, slow response, and noisy low-light photos. But color, contrast, and clarity rivals dSLRs costing thousands of dollars more.
Eric Wienke used the DP1 to shoot our Day taker on April 5, 2009. Vitals: f/4, ISO 100, 1/30 sec, 16.6mm. Color is rich and satisfying, which is typical of this digicam and its successors. Regarding the photo and the date taken: “It’s the 15th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death. This is a tribute to the song ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ from the album ‘In Utero‘”. Hence, the self-title.
