A Landing and a Rising

This is a Featured Image too long delayed in sharing. The view is from the Skyfari Aerial Tram at San Diego Zoo. Building in the foreground is the California Tower, which is located in nearby Balboa Park. The structure was built in 1915.

I really enjoy the zoo, but we haven’t visited since December. The new parking fees, for which members are exempt, created inertia we never overcame. Parking is more complicated now with mixed free and fee, bringing about congestion and confusion.

Our membership expires on April 30, and unless something dramatic occurs during the next 10 days, Annie and I likely won’t renew. The zoo doesn’t feel as fun, as accessible, now. The same applies even more so for Balboa Park, for similar reasons. And these are walkable destinations: 3 km (1.9 miles) to the zoo, 3.3 km (2 miles) to the park.

Signatures are being gathered—at least 80,000 are needed—to put the “Balboa Park Free Parking Restoration Act” on the November ballot. If successful, free parking for all would return to San Diego’s crown jewel.

I used Nikon Zf and NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR lens to capture the photo, which I chose to keep moody during post-production. Vitals: f/8, ISO 100, 1/1000 sec, 200mm; 10:38 a.m. PDT, April 16, 2025.
