Flickr a Day 131: ‘Don’t be Judgemental’

I chose today’s selection mainly for what it isn’t. Color. Absence makes the street portrait more curious; provocative. You lean forward into the screen to better see the detail, then click to look larger. My preference would be different composition, but the subject’s expression, particularly his eyes, evokes something—sadness perhaps—that is moving.

Tobi Gaulke used Leica Camera AG M Monochrom and Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens to shoot self-titled “Don’t be Judgemental” on March 5, 2015. Vitals: f/1.4, ISO 800, 1/30 sec. This is the third photo featuring the Monochrom (see Days 87 and 120).

Flickr a Day 31: ‘Couple’

Today’s selection comes from Flickr searches for the Leica X1 and X2 digicams. Photographer Andrew Xu uses the latter, and I once owned the former. Originally from China, and living in New Zealand, the VFX artist is true to his profession, by posting photos that punch you with their terrific visual style.

I could easily fill the remaining 324 Flickrs a Day with Andrew’s images, which is comment about the challenge choosing one. I left the decision to fate, picking the pic from my initial search. Andrew’s style is so strong because, in part, he has a photographic philosophy that merges art and science. I recommend reading the full explanation on his Flickr profile page

Ken Hansen: Mr. Leica

Since late February, I looked to buy the Leica X1, but the camera is unavailable most everywhere. Steve Huff’s review turned me onto the X1, which, aside for price, is exactly what I have been searching for: A compact digicam with high IQ (image quality). In early March, I got on the Pro Shop for Photographers Leica X1 waiting list and waited and waited. The call came in late June when I was too cash poor; I had to pass on buying one of the two cameras the Leica dealer received that month.

Steve Huff reviews the Leica X1

Over the weekend, I did some research on the Leica X1 compact digital camera, which is just now shipping. Digital Photogtaphy Review’s highly technical review gave the X1 mixed marks. I found Steve Huff’s X1 review to be much more interesting and useful—as it’s more real world. The amazing image above is the first taken by Steve using the X1; digital compacts simply don’t produce such detail.
