Flickr a Day 28: Licensing Lesson

All photos in this series are authenticated for copyright. Sometimes the process for the photographer is more difficult, particularly when language and location are factors. Luigi Alesi shot today’s selection, licensed Creative Commons noncommercial, on April 26, 2008. But wait. There is another Lugi Alesi, also from Italy and the same town. The first joined Flickr in April 2007 and the other in May 2010. Yes, they are the same person. His last posting in the first account links the second.

The reason is a licensing lesson. Lugi switched from Creative Commons to All Rights Reserved, so he could sell his photos. The collection of them on 500px for sale is exceptional. His landscapes are pure stock images. Just lovely. What some people may not realize: Creative Commons is permanent. Technically, you can’t retract the license, as Flickr stupidly suggested be done in late November. Lugi left the CC stuff in one account, choosing to retain full rights in another.

He used the Canon Powershot SD950 IS, a compact, to shoot this photo. But he moved up to the Nikon D90 before posting ended at the first Flickr. He shoots with the Nikon D7100 today. I chose this photo for perspective and color. Vitals: f/4, ISO 80, 1/800 sec, 16.33mm.
