Better Than Mardi Gras

The days when rain isn’t falling, but the ground is wet and the air sweet Spring fresh and moist, are delightful. Over on Louisiana Street, some young men made festive the late afternoon of Feb. 22, 2023. They skateboarded to boombox rock, and I absolutely loved the spirit and ambiance they created. Why not bang on doors and have an impromptu block party?

Pepto, who is among the “Cats of University Heights” sauntered through the mayhem, taking up observant position by a car. That’s his block, baby.

I loved the energy and enthusiasm of the skateboarding trio. Think how many guys would be sunk into the couch, hand clutching the game controller, and thumbs prattling about in some shoot `em up play. These boys chose to get outside and get to improving their acrobatic skating skills.

The Featured Image captures one moment, and I won’t defend the composition. How can I? My wife and I walked together, which limited how much time could be spent taking photos—and with Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Smartphones aren’t exactly sports shooters. Vitals: f/2.4, ISO 50, 1/2400 sec, 70mm (film equivalent); 3:37 p.m. PST.

I wish this photograph or others—and video not made—could adequately convey the festive feeling or the symbolism my tumultuous thinking connects. Mardi Gras was underway in New Orleans. The young men skateboarded to rock music on a street named after the city’s state. That’s celebration.
