We return to “The Menacing Palm” for what should have been a festive visit. His other guises include: “Be Mine“, “Hungry Bunny“, and “The Patriotic Palm“. But when attempting to write this post, I couldn’t access my website, for reason to be determined.
Chrome and Edge served up error: “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN”, which is a fancy way of saying that the domain cannot be resolved. The problem can be generated locally on the computer or elsewhere. Online, at my provider’s admin site, I found no apparent problems with hosting, so I presumed the problem must be with my laptop. But the obvious thing wasn’t the cause.
Before opening a Windows command line and starting to flush this or that, I checked my phone: Same error. Well, that must mean the webhosting. As I prepared to call tech support, suddenly I wondered: Could the problem be my Internet Service Provider or local network? I turned off WiFi on the phone and tried to open my site over cellular data. Yikes! Success.
I reset the ISP and home routers, which solved nothing. So I tethered the laptop to smartphone and started writing—until another error appeared and DNS stopped resolving. Oh my.
As I write, I also am on the phone with my webhost tech support. Suddenly, I can access the site from my ISP router but not the other—nor can the tech to whom I speak. With a little luck, I might post before it all goes to hell. She sees the DNS resolving some places, one being California (hence my access), but not most anywhere in the world. She is even more baffled than I.
I used Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra—in Portrait mode—to shoot the Featured Image, today. Vitals: f/1.7, ISO 12, 1/900 sec, 23mm (film equivalent); 4:32 p.m. PDT.
