Nikon Zf First Shots

The new camera proves to be a bit of a bear to handle, simply because the ergonomics surprisingly differ from Leica Q2 and Q2 Monchrom. I expected more obvious manipulation using tactile controls, and I still can’t fathom why the NIKKOR 40mm f/2 (SE) lens has no obvious aperture ring.

I wouldn’t return the camera for these reasons, though. I will adapt, adopt new habits, and make the best of the Nikon Zf‘s many benefits (and idiosyncrasies). The retro-looker packs plenty of potential.

There has to be a first photo; I am not swooning over the Featured Image but don’t dislike it either. The rock snowman made his first appearance on this site in December 2019 (here and here) and again in March 2023 (taken in December 2022). Vitals: f/9, ISO 100, 1/125 sec, 40mm; 12:25 p.m. PST, two days ago.

The second shot spotlights what I call the Christmas House, which gets a big Thanksgiving makeover, too. Vitals: f/3.5, ISO 100, 1/1000 sec, 40mm; 12:31 p.m. The third photo marks the oddest thing: A vintage Santa strapped to a utility pole. Will schoolkids around the globe miss out because Santa is tied up?

Vitals: f/2, ISO 100, 1/6400 sec, 40mm; 1:07 pm. PDT, yesterday. Aperture was manually set, to maximize bokeh. All three pics could use more fill light.

More photos will come, as I get the hang of this beautiful beast.
