The Bear Necessities

My wife and I don’t go to San Diego Zoo as much as we should. Our current membership expires in April, and I can’t guarantee that we would renew. Perhaps more negligent, I have a trove of unpublished photos from numerous visits that really should be shared with you.

Let’s start with one, and surely no additional identification is necessary, eh? I used Nikon Zf and NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR lens to capture the Featured Image on Sept. 27, 2025. Vitals: f/6.3, ISO 400, 1/320 sec, 200mm; 3:51 p.m. PDT. Composed as shot.

San Diego Zoo has many claims to fame. My favorite is the first video uploaded to YouTube, on April 23, 2005. The site would officially open in November of that year and be bought by Google for $1.6 billion 11 months later. This week, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London announced that it had “acquired an early watch page of the video“—19-second “Me at the Zoo“, which currently has 383 million views.

This post’s title derives from “The Bare Necessities“, a song from Walt Disney animated film “The Jungle Book”.
