Product placement doesn’t get much better than this. Character Ryan Hardy uses Microsoft Surface on The Following.

You Belong to the Fifth Estate
My wife and I just returned home from watching “The Fifth Estate“. My problem isn’t the film but the trailer, which makes the movie look more like a political thriller. The film is nothing like […]
Black Mirror
Starting last night, I watched the six episodes of “Black Mirror”. What fantastically entertaining television is the program, which isn’t legally available in the United States (although Amazon sells an off-region DVD).
I hunted online for sites streaming both three-episode series. I prefer Series 1, between them. I didn’t Torrent but streamed.
I Cut the Cord
The apartment was strangely silent last night and darker than usual. Gone was the flickering light filling the center room as one of us scanned the program guide. A year later than planned, we dismantled the TV shrine and took back the living room from the false idol. Henceforth, we will worship at a different altar. Finally, I cut cable’s cord—IPTV, really, but we all call it the other, eh?
I feel anxiety and elation at the dramatic change, which allowed us to rearrange the furniture such that the living room is more open, more inviting, and more suited to entertaining real people. The television now resides in the bedroom, more for the benefit of my wife’s sleepless nights (the thing is narcotic). We’ll stream from Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix primarily—haha, maybe even iTunes. I had planned Google Play by way of Nexus Q, but the search giant nixes that option.
Canadian Treasure
Sometimes you find the most surprising movies on Netflix. “One Week“, directed by Michael McGowan.
Canadian Strife along 'The Border'
I grew up watching Canadian TV from the CBC station across the St. John River in New Brunswick. Programs like “The Beachcombers”, “The Friendly Giant”, “Mr. Dressup” and “North of 60”, among many others, delighted. In 1995, my wife, daughter and I moved home to Maine for 18 months, and my daughter watched “Big Comfy Couch” before its stateside debut. Many successful American TV shows were produced in Canada, such as “Battlestar Galactica” and “X-Files” and many HGTV programs.
The Canadian shows have a much different tone than their American counterparts that reminds of British TV. Well, they’re both part of the Commonwealth, eh. Yesterday I discovered CBC drama “The Border” on Netflix and have since streamed four episodes. I like it so far.
BSG Wear for a Grand-plus
Battlestar Galactica costume by Anovos, spotted at San Diego Comic-Con 2012. Cost is $1,250 without the insignia pins, which add another $320 to price. Costume is produced in Canada by same company that did them […]
Supergirl
There is much interest in my Supergirl photos from San Diego Comic-Con 2010. I published the heavily cropped version of the pic above yesterday. Today, I did some quick editing so that the full-body image could be seen—again, because of the interest.
All-Purpose Media
Until the Net arrived, the history of media had been a tale of fragmentation. Different technologies progressed down different paths, leading to a proliferation of special-purpose tools. Books and newspapers could present text and images, […]
‘Downfall’ Reenactment 56
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JpmvtPXQR4] Brandon Hardesty has appropriately answered YouTube yanking (or disabling) dozens of “Downfall” parodies. Brandon recreated the “Hitler Bunker” scene for all those people looking to make their own “Downfall” parody. You can laugh at […]
Did ’24’ Help Elect a President?
It’s a question I’ve pondered for some time, and I’m inclined to answer affirmative. The subliminal cultural impact of television is too easily overlooked, although the New York Times took a politically charged look in March 26 story “For ‘24,’ Terror Fight (and Series) Nears End“. The Times’ perspective is different than one I present here, but worth noting for what’s there and what is not.
Hollywood is Faker Than You Think
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clnozSXyF4k] Whoa, is anything real anymore? This Stargate Studios short shows how much Hollywood studios use computer-generated graphics to fill in locations or to fake them. What? You thought Jack Bauer was in Washington? He […]
