We Found a Rat Rod

This morning, my wife and I walked through Lafayette Hotel, here in University Heights, to see if it was as bustling busy as last Sunday when we looked in to see the holiday decorations. The place was livelier seven days ago.

I had wanted to stroll in with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 to capture video of the zillion Christmas trees (some hanging from the ceiling) and raucous crowd (some of whom were hanging from the ceiling—or might as well been). Perhaps Christmas Eve, or better, New Years Eve will bring the right ambiance.

After we left, I spotted a rustic car, or—in proper vehicular vernacular—a rat rod. I used my very recently acquired Nikon Zf and NIKKOR 40mm f/2 (SE) lens to capture the Featured Image. Vitals: f/6.3, ISO 100, 1/160 sec, 40mm; 11:52 a.m. PST. Detail is super sharp. Twenty years ago, I owned the Nikon D70, which produced equally appealing detail and similarly accurate color. Consistency counts.

The companion capture comes from Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, because the focal length makes the shot. Vitals: f/1.7, ISO 12, 1/1000, 23mm (film equivalent); 11:54 a.m. Take a long look at the building construction across the street in the background, then click through to “Return to Sender“. See the postal store? That business, several others, a church, and three charming Craftsman homes used to occupy the same block.

Welcome to high-rise San Diego. The city’s unofficial motto is “More population density, baby!”
