Serene shots like self-titled “Golden Autumn Hour of Washington DC“, by Nicolas Raymond, may be memories until Election 2020 turmoil eases into historical oblivion. “Early morning autumn scene featuring the Washington Monument as seen from […]

Flickr a Week 26a: ‘Purple Fields–Hitchin Lavender, Cadwell Farm, Hertfordshire’
First-half of turbulent 2020 ends with soothing self-titled “Purple Fields—Hitchin Lavender, Cadwell Farm, Hertfordshire“, which Barbara Asboth captured on Aug. 22, 2015 using Canon EOS 5D Mark III and 28-75mm lens.
“This lady was dressed as the perfect subject in orange against the sea of purple”, Barbara says of the moment. “Processed to have a magical feel to it, just like I felt in person. They were already harvesting the lavender that day, though, so if you want to go see this, you will have to wait until next year for the most beautiful views. It’s worth it, though”. Lovely composition and stunning ethereal feeling take the Sunday spot—and oh, so well-deserved.
Flickr a Week 25b: ‘Zombie Movie’
For Father’s Day, we present something sublime and classic—for timeless composition and subject: Self-titled “Zombie Movie“, by Robert Couse-Baker. The television may be analog and archaic but the camera is digital (Canon EOS 5D Mark […]
Flickr a Week 23: ‘Black Lives Matter Protest, Seattle WA’
The series spotlights the current crisis raging across America for the second of three consecutive entries. To recap: Nine days ago, George Floyd died in the custody of Minneapolis police. The Hennepin County corner has certified the death as a homicide, and police officer Derek Chauvin is charged with murder. Since, protests in most major metropolitans are rife with looting, property destruction, and violence.
“Black Lives Matter Protest, Seattle WA“, one of a collection of street shots using the same self-title, quite literally illuminates pent-up rage and resentment from some and attempts to create anarchy by others. America is at war, with itself.
Flickr a Day 347: ‘Choiseul Fisherman, St Lucia’
The worst of the worst of the worst of the best—picking a single pic from the photostream of Heather Buckley is more challenging than all the other tough cases combined. I could choose any and […]
Flickr a Day 346: ‘The Death of Me’
Whoa, here’s a composite that you don’t want to experience in this life or the next. Sam Breach shot self-titled “The Death of Me” on March 23, 2013, using Canon EOS 5D Mark III and EF […]
Flickr a Day 248: ‘Ombra’
Choosing today’s selection, I considered many—emphasis many— by Andrea Donato Alemanno. Among them: hugging couple; kissing couple; older gentleman; tailor; and woman with flowers. His photostream is a rich study of street black-and-whites, mainly captured with the […]
Flickr a Day 167: ‘Changing of the Guard Pipe Band’
The photostream of Rennett Stowe is delightful—filled with, as he says, “stock photographs, art photos, and a few family photos”. The stock stuff is fine example of what this type of work should be. Composition, […]
Flickr a Day 160: ‘Every Little Piece of My Heart’
I came across the photostream of Lotus Carroll about a month ago. There was never a doubt that she would be featured but more question: “Which piece of art?” For weeks, I kept her Flickr open in a browser tab as reminder. Had intellect triumphed over intuition—post immediately rather than wait—I would have missed delightful self-titled “Every Little Piece of My Heart”, which she shot on May 18, 2015.
Lotus used Canon EOS 5D Mark III and EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens (gotta love Canon L) to capture today’s selection. Vitals: f/4, ISO 640, 1/200 sec, 88 mm. You might think she performed some Photoshop montage magic, but this is a clever natural shot—a backdoor selfie with focus on her eight year-old. The self-title punctuates meaning. Visual storytelling is rarely this good…unless it’s another pic from her fabulous Flickr.
Flickr a Day 100: Coachella
No single image can convey the spirit, creativity, and vitality of Thomas Hawk photography. He is the master street photographer and storyteller, who keeps his camera as nearly constant companion. Is the thing surgically attached? No effort to chose the one is worthy, so I don’t try.
Instead, for our one-hundredth selection, timeliness helps sort more than 100,000 Flickr pics to a choice of one among 880. Because, coincidentally, on Day 100, one of North America’s most popular music festivals, Coachella, kicks off the first of two weekends. I was lucky enough to buy my daughter tickets for the second year in a row. She is there now.
