The Cats of University Heights: Jake

comments 2

For our last Caturday on Standard Time, before clocks jump (grumble, grumble) one hour ahead, we start an impromptu series of three harnessed felines. Two of them will lead us back to Alabama, where, for reasons that defy logic, more furballs have been seen than on any other street. But first we turn North—not the direction, but the avenue—between Madison and Monroe.

On March 7, 2019, while walking by where once lived Charlie and The Colonel, across the street I saw someone walking a handsome beastie. Of course, such sighting demanded investigation. I introduced myself to the friendly gent and met his beloved pet Jake. The kitty usually gets some out-in-the-yard supervised time; the harness and leash are the new thing, and Jake showed some resistance but not overt unwillingness to being outdoors this way.

Jake is a huge cat. Not fat. His paws are large, as is his head. Gentle as he seems, size would make him fearsome in most any catfight—qualifying age could make the difference, being he is 13 years old.

I used Fujifilm GFX 50R and Fujinon GF63mmF2.8 R WR lens to shoot the Featured Image and first companion; the last portrait comes from Google Pixel 3 XL. The camera shots are cropped but otherwise were converted from Raw to JPEG without any other editing. Vitals, aperture manually set: f/5.6, ISO 100, 1/210 sec, 63mm; 11:25 a.m. PST. The other is the same except 1/170 sec.

The smartphone photo is tweaked for lighting and taste. I caught Jake in mid-meow, although someone might mistake his posture and exposed teeth as something more aggressive. Nope. He is a gentle giant. Vitals: f/1.8, ISO 62, 1/7813 sec, 4.44mm; 11:24 a.m. PST.

  1. It’s been a while since he’s been in the harness, but I hope that soon you’ll see him happily trotting to get coffee with me in the mornings. It was a joy to meet you!

I look forward to seeing him trotting along and meeting you again. And you never know about the leash. Down Monroe in University Heights East lives a cat who goes on walks with his owner and her dog. He is low to the ground but moves speedily. No harness or leash. I hope Jake surprises you.
