Today marks the tenth anniversary of this series, which I hadn’t planned on going beyond 30 days. How many cats could there possibly be in a neighborhood dominated by dogs? Six-hundred-forty-eight profiles later, including this one, partly answers that question.
The project started during a period of eyesight recovery following cataracts surgery in both eyes and ongoing treatment for my retinas, which suffered from Macular Edema. My retinas are long ago healed, and implants replaced my clouded natural lenses. Practice became permanent, and the feline street shooting continued. I sit on substantive backlog of unpublished kitties that need attention.
Our anniversary kitty is a recent find. I shot the Featured Image on Sept. 24, 2026, using Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Vitals: f/2.9, ISO 64, 1/359 sec, 230mm (film equivalent); 8:27 a.m. PDT. This fine feline is the eighty-eighth found behind door or window. The severe clip of his left ear, and cause for his nickname, indicates an animal recovered from the streets, possibly a feral colony, and adopted.
Reflecting on the decade, much is changed with respect to the cats. For starters, there are more of them. While University Heights remains a dog haven, the cat population has exploded seemingly exponentially. With their rise, and the number that roam free, coyote numbers anecdotally are way up. There are multiple coyote sighting postings on Nextdoor every day and an alarming increase in reports of missing pets (small dogs included).
Finally, I apologize for the uncharacteristic absence. Something unexpected is afoot in the Wilcox household, which will be explained in a forthcoming post (sooner rather than later). Cutter marks the first post since September 8.
